Weekly Project Post — Week 2

  • What did you do last week?

This past week, I spent a lot of time soul searching, trying to figure out what to do my project on and, really, how to get the most out of this class that I can. I wanted to do something that I’m passionate on, something that involves a little creativity… but also something useful that might help me in my future career.

I take my cat Moki on long walks with his leash and harness, and it was on one of those walks with my boy that I suddenly had that “Eureka moment”! I’ve done some very cool projects both for my original undergrad and for this CS Post Bach program over the last years. And I often dream of presenting those in a portfolio for future employers while job applying. This class might be the perfect place to ready a nice professional-looking portfolio to help me find jobs!

I’ll be presenting a formal math paper I once wrote. A cool math research website that I run. A fun colorful data structure I engineered. And a big NFL-player-stats predictive data mining machine I designed. Many of these will need significant work to be “spruced up” to their maximum potential for display, so I’m not just submitting past work.

  • What do you plan to do this week?

This week, I think I’ll have my hands filled beginning to make my website and GitHub. Almost like laying the foundation of the building before constructing it. If I have enough time to do the basics there, perhaps I’ll move on to gathering the relevant programs and math papers and putting a rough draft of the portfolio together. But that might be more likely to occur the week after. One good step at a time!

  • Are there any impediments in your way?

Nope! Ready to get to work.

  • Reflection on the process you used last week, how can you make the process work better?

Well… Last week’s was mostly brainstorming and so was perfect for doing while out on a walk with my cat. This week’s will be “actual” work (rolling up my sleeves and getting my hands dirty). If you’d like my honest truth, I’m probably going to put a little horror-movie marathon on in the background and spend some good time on the couch grinding this work via my laptop. Time to actually get to work.
